Greetings! On April 26, 2008, a very unique event took place in Gilmer, Texas. This was the reburial of Colonel Cullen Redwine Earp. His remains had been located in western Upshur County and, thanks to the efforts of General John T. Furlow, Preston Furlow, and others, his remains were exhumed and reburied in the Hopewell Cemetery in Latch, just west of Gilmer. A beautiful coffin was provided by Preston Furlow. The Order of Confederate Gray provided their services as the Honor Guard. After marching from the log cabin east of the courthouse, we assembled on the courthouse lawn where descendants of Col. Earp spoke, as well as Preston Furlow, myself, and others. After a fine meal at Hadden's sandwich shop we reassembled down the road from the cemetery and marched into the cemetery with the coffin on a horse drawn carriage. Col. Earp was buried with military honors and was given Masonic burial rites sponsored by Bethesda Lodge #142 in Gilmer. Rifle salutes and artillery salutes were given as part of the ceremony. Many thanks to Johnnie Holley for providing the wagon that took Col. Earp to the courthouse and to the cemetery and for bringing his cannon to the event to participate in the artillery salute. Thanks go out, as well, to Jim Templin and Randy Jones for marching at the front of my column with the DCV flag and the MOS&B flag. Our presence at this event was noticed and everything was very positive! Thanks to Steve Lucas we have a number of excellent photographs documenting the event and our participation in it. Our thanks also go out to Terry Ayers for his participation in the Honor Guard and serving as one of the provosts for this event. My gratitude also goes out to all other DCV members who participated in this event. I'm also pleased to report that we will have two new potential members applying to join our ranks shortly. I'm looking forward to having them on board. Thank again, ladies and gentlemen, for participating in the unique occasion! This is what we are here for.
